Asked where the ideas for this programme came from, in the same interview mentioned earlier, Grant described this philosophy and how it developed.

Grant then explained…
By chance, I watched a video of Steve Jobs explaining how you’ve got to start with the customers experience and work back.
This inspired me to deeply explore the whole cycle a business goes through to choose, fund, service and then change their copier or printer.
First, how businesses choose the right machine and supplier. The meetings with salespeople, waiting for quotes, internal meetings to look at the proposals and so on.
Second, how they finance the equipment. The lease approval procedure, interest charged, set-up fees, third party finance companies and settlement figures.
Third, how businesses receive and pay for the service; and
Finally, how do businesses change their equipment during the agreement or at the end of the agreement.
I then wrote a ‘what if?’ wish list on how I could improve the customers experience in every section.
For example, my ‘what if?’ list for how customers could finance the equipment was:
What if… we could guarantee them lease acceptance, so there was no lease acceptance procedure?
What if… we could offer a lease interest free?
What if… we could remove set-up fees and other lease charges?
What if… we could provide the lease facility, to remove the hassle of dealing third party finance companies?
What if… we could offer a long guarantee period, where our customers could cancel the lease agreement with no financial penalties and have any lease payments they’ve made refunded?
What if… our customers could change their equipment during the lease term without having to pay settlement figures?
What if… we could give our customers the choice to own the equipment at the end of the lease?
That was it. And I did that for the entire cycle a business goes through to find, fund, service and change their copying and printing devices.
This gave me the blueprint for the Total Flexibility Programme.
Although, initially, I doubted it was possible.
The day I finished my ‘what if?’ list, I was buzzing. This is it, I thought. This will change the world! Positive thoughts raced through my mind, my body full of adrenalin – I remember struggling to get to sleep that night.
The next morning, I was up early taking my dog on his walk and everything had changed. I felt deflated, no confidence, full of doubt and my head was full of negative thoughts…

Then, later that day, I had this realisation:
If one of my friends had a photocopier from me and then one or two months later they informed me they made a mistake. The machine isn’t right for them. I wouldn’t say ‘Sorry, it’s too late now. You signed the lease.’
Or, if they needed to upgrade during the lease I wouldn’t say ‘Sure, but you have to pay this large settlement figure – which includes interest. And this settlement figure then gets placed on a new lease, where they charge more interest on the interest.’
Or, if they wanted to keep the machine at the end of the lease I wouldn’t say ‘Sorry, you must lease a new one. I’ve sold your old machine to another company for a huge profit.’
Whatever their reason for wanting to change, I would help them out. Do everything I could for them.
It was then I thought to myself:
“Stuff being realistic.
I don’t want to be realistic.
This has nothing to do with being realistic.
It’s about doing the right thing.”
